OBITUARY

VERGIL SMITH

Vergil R. Smth, 84, of Cedar Falls, and formerly of Traer, died at her home in Cedar Falls, Friday, March 31, 2000, of a coronary.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, April 4, at the first United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls officiated by Dr. Bruce Ursin. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls.

Delpha Brockmeyer served as organist for the service and soloist was Wayne Jacobson.

Casket bearers were Justin Smith, Ryan Smith, Cheryl Thompson, Vicki Copeland, Sharri Smith and Shaun Thompson.

Memorials may be directed to the church.

Vergil Smith was born March 14, 1916, in Clermont, IA, the daughter of Herman and Katie (Grimes) Rolfs. She received her teaching certificate from Upper Iowa University at Fayette, IA, and taught in rural schools around Clermont.

She was united in marriage to Kenneth Nelson Smith May 29, 1937, in Clermont. Kenneth died Aug. 3, 1980. She then married P. Kenneth Joyce Jan. 23, 1982 in Cedar Falls. He died Dec. 3, 1998.

Following her first marriage she worked for the telephone company in Hawkeye, IA, and then, while raising her family, worked with her husband in his construction business.

She also worked for Clay Equipment Company for a short time after moving to Cedar Falls in 1967.

She was Past President of the Oelwein Community School Board and the Oelwein Women's Club; Past President of the Iowa Federation of Women's Clubs; Past State Flower Judge of the Iowa Gardens Clubs. While in Oelwein she was Sunday School superintendent and Youth Fellowship leader in the United Methodist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her two husbands; two brothers, Archie and Herschel Rolfs and one sister, Gretchen Pyka.

Vergil is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Kathie R. and Jim Bagley of Portland, OR, Rachel R. Smith and her husband Richard of Madison, Wis.; a son and his wife, Bruce and Vicky Smith of Bettendorf; nine grandchidren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Harlan Rolfs of Reno, NV; five step-children, Patrick, Kevin and Mike Joyce, Peggy Fischer and Kathy Seabold, all of Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN, as well as numerous step-grandchildren.

Richardson Funeral Home, Cedar Falls was in charge of arrangements.
