OBITUARY

ROBERT POWELL

Funeral services for Robert Peter Powell, 82, of Traer will be held Friday, Nov. 22, 10:30 am at the United Presbyterian Church in Traer with burial in Buckingham Cemetery, rural Traer. the Traer American Legion will be in charge of the flag presentation.

Bob died Monday, Nov. 18, 1996, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo after becoming ill at his home that morning.

The funeral service will be officiated by the Rev. Rick Vesely. Beulah Whannel will serve as organist. Floral tributes will be handled by Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Shinn.

Robert P. Powell was born March 5, 1914, east of Traer, Iowa, the son of John and Lena (Steffen) Powell. He attended country school and later Traer schools graduating from Traer High School in the Class of 1930.

He continued his education at the University of Iowa where he received his Commerce degree and later his law degree in 1936.

On Feb. 11, 1938, he was united in marriage to Margaret Boettcher and the couple made their home in Traer where he began his law practice. Bob entered the U.S. Navy and served his country during World War II.

Following his discharge he retuirned to Traer to continue his practice with his partner, John T. (Tom) Roan.

Following Magaret's death in 1974 he continued his practice until his retirement in 1982.

On July 3, 1976 he was united in marriage to Evelyn Craig at Waterloo and they have made their home at 400 3rd Street in Traer.

Bob was a great conservationist, enjoyed being outdoors, enjoyed working with water fowl, trapshooting and was an All-American for five years.

He was a 50-year member of the Traer American Legion, Cedar Falls Gun Club and the Amateur Trapshooting Association. He presently was on the Board of Directors for the Farmers Savings Bank and was a former member of the North tama School Board.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn of Traer; one son and his wife, William and Cathy Craig of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Ruth Smith of Chariton and Mrs. Bruce (Suzi) McEltree of Toledo and five grandchildren.

Overton Family Funeral Homes in Traer is in charge of arrangements.
