OBITUARY

Funeral services for Celia E. Owwens, 89, of Traer, were held at the Ripley United Church of Christ Tuesday, July 20, at 1:30 pm with the Rev. Mark Binder officiating followed by the Order of the Eastern Star funeral ceremony. Interment was at Buckingham Cemetery, rural Traer.

Casket bearers were Mark Ilten, Curtis Glenn, Joel Ilten, Timothy Rogers, Lee Owens and John Bauch. Honorary casket bearers were Victor Kutin, Leonard Vorba, Harold Vorba, Evan Wilson, Leonard Ruzicka and William Danker. Organist was Judy Mason and soloist was Wayne Dunlavey. In charge of floral arrangements were Ruth Ann Owens and Euterpa Thomas.

Celia E. Owens was born Nov. 19, 1903, to Edward and Frances (Brestan) Kutin of Traer. The family moved to Clarkson, Neb., where Celia received her education at Clarkson, graduating in 1921. (She attended her 60th, 65th and 70th class reunions.)

On Nov. 19, 1925, Celia married Omer O. Owens in Des Moines. She spent all her married life in Traer until illness this past year forced her to close her home and move to her daughter's home in Waterloo. She spent her time between Leawood, Kan., Sioux City and Waterloo.

Mrs. Owens taught rural school in Nebraska and clerked in the drug store at Clarkson. She joined Bona Dea Chapter #375 of OES, held all the offices including worthy matron, and was an active member of the Past Matrons. She was a 60-year member of the OES.

In addition to helping Mr. Owens run his insurance business from their home, Celia was a charter member of the Iowana Club, worked with the local Girl Scouts, and was one of the first members of the Traer Amvet Auxiliary. She was a gallon-plus donor to the blood bank, and was an active member of the Ripley United Church of Christ. She held most offices in the Women's Fellowship and was a long time member of the Bovey Class.

Celia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, O. O. Owens; and a sister, Margaret Yukl.

Survivors include her three daughters, Patricia Ilten of Leawood, Kan., Florence Muller of Sioux City, and Jean Rogers of Waterloo; two brothers, Joseph J. Kutin of Waterloo, Stanley Kutin of Hudson; two sisters, Agenes Smith of Worden, Ill., and Vlasta Brestan of Hudson; nine grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 24 step-great-grandchildren.

Overton Funerral Home was in charge of arrangements.
