OBITURY

Leslie P. Lawrence, 82, of Harlan, IA and formerly of Traer, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000. Memorial services for Mr. Lawrence were held Wednesday, Sept. 27, at the Knutson Funeral Home in Avoca with Gayle Wilcox officiating.

Leslie Pershing Lawrence was born March 10, 1918, on a farm 2-1/2 miles north of Portsmouth, IA. He was one of five sons of George and Pearl (Legan) Lawrence.

He attended school in Portsmouth and Shelby, IA and graduated from the Shelby Consolidated Schools. Later in life he attended an Extension of Iowa State University at Denison, IA for two years.

On Sept. 16, 1940, he was united in marriage to Frances Davis in Wibaux, MT. The couple moved to his grandparents' farm two miles north of Portsmouth where their two sons and two daughters were born.

In 1964 Leslie and Frances moved to Traer where they opened the Traer Dairy Sweet and Leslie also sold insurance for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. In 1970 they moved to Ames where he later was employed by Iowa State University. The couple later moved to Southlake, Texas and when Leslie retired at age 70, they moved back to Elkader, later moving to Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan.

Leslie's favorite hobby was oil painting and many of his works of art are hanging in banks, churches and in many homes.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Surviving are his wife, Frances of 1109 Elm St., Apt. 201, Harlan, IA 51537; two sons, Edward and his wife, Kris of McGregor, IA and Roger and his wife, Sandi of Ames; two daughters, Laraine and her husband, Bernie Ely of Santa Fe, NM and Linda and her husband, Marc Powell of Traer; three brothers; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
