OBITUARY

Funeral services for Lawrence K. Childs, 87, of Traer, were held Monday, March 8 at Overton Funeral Home in Traer. Burial was at Buckingham Cemetery, rural Traer. He died at home Friday, March 5, 1993.

Pastor John Kroon, hospice chaplain, officiated at the funeral service, and Mrs. Donald McLean werved as organist. Casket bearers were Dennis Deke, Tyler Deke, Tracy Deke, Tom Childs, Richard Childs and Richard Engel. Mr. and Mrs. Donald McLean tended to floral tributes. Masonic services were held Sunday evening, March 7.

Lawrence Kolp Childs was born in Tama County Oct. 6, 1905, the son of Frederick and Sadie (Kolp) Childs. He graduated from Traer High School in 1936, then worked and managed hatcheries in Traer, Gladbrook, Dike and Victor in his early years.

On Dec. 23, 1938, Lawrence married Gladys Briggs at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. The couple has made their home for many years at 704 Sixth Street, Traer, and Lawrence worked for local businesses and farmed.

Lawrence Childs was an active member of the community, and served on the Traer Volunteer Fire Department for 33 years. He was a 40-year member of Hesperia Lodge No. 340 A.F. & A.M., and was Township Elections officer and Perry Township Clerk for many years. He also took an interest in Taylor Park in Traer, and served as Park Commissioner for 40 years.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Floyd and Seward.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys, and a son Ronald, both of Traer; one daughter, Mrs. Jim (Susan) Ohrt of Cedar Falls, and four grandchildren.
