Thelma Karr Benter

Funeral services for Thelma Karr Benter, 74, of Traer, were held Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Overton Funeral Home in Traer with Rev. Donal Schoeppler of St. Luke Lutheran Church officiating. Burial was in West Union Cemetery, rural Traer.

She was pronounced dead on Sunday. Aug. 31, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following an accident at the intersection of County Road F-12 and Highway 965 in Johnson County, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

Casket bearers were Jeffrey Karr, Lon Karr, Eric Karr, Chad Karr, Brian Vesely, Norman Vesely, Rob Karr, Tod Karr, Tim Seegmiller, Mikal Seegmiller, Dan Seegmiller, Ron Randall, Rick Wilson, Kevin Karr and Kris Karr. Attending to flowers were Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Robb and Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Buddenhagen.

Thelma Karr Benter was born south on Traer on September 23, 1911, daughter of George and Gertrude (Robb) Cone. She received her education in the country school and the Traer Public School. She married Cleone Karr in 1929, and the couple made their home north of Traer for many years, later moving to the Dysart community.

In 1948, Thelma began working at Professional Foods in Cedar Rapids, and later made her home there.

In 1968, Thelma moved to Traer to make her homE, most recetly residing at 509 8th Street.

In her spare time, Thelma enjoyed sewing and mending for her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Dwain, and one grandson, Greg.

She survived by five sons, Marvin Karr of Rudd; Robert Karr of Traer; Paul Karr of Dysart, Roger Karr of Waterloo, and Gaylord Karr of Cedar Rapids; three daughters, Mrs. Terry (Bernadine) Liverman of Virginia Beach, Va.; Mrs. Larry (Phyllis) Thoren of Dysart; and Beverly Randall of Traer; as well as 19 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
