WELSH, Leo Vernon (1926 - 1996)

Obituary

Leo Vernon WELSH was born in Lohrville, Iowa on March 24, 1926, the son of William and Mary (COLLINS) WELSH. Leo was raised in the Marshalltown area and received his education at the St. Mary’s Catholic School. Leo then entered the US Marine Corps and served his country during WWII, receiving the Purple Heart in the Pacific Campaign. Following the war Leo returned to Iowa and married Elizabeth GRABENBAUER and they made their home in Marshalltown with their four children, Michael, David, Patrick & Mary. After their divorce Leo eventually moved to Traer. On June 14, 1977 Leo married Carol RYKENA-DeVRIES in Albert Lea, Minnesota. they made their home near Traer as Leo worked as a livestock buyer. Leo was attending a Livestock Sale when he became ill suddenly and was taken to the Marshalltown Medical Center where his death came on Wednesday January 31, 1996 at the age of 69 years. Leo was a member of the American Legion, Knight’s of Columbus and St. Paul’s Catholic Church all of Traer. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and a sister. Leo was a devoted husband and father to his family that survived him, his wife Carol, 5 sons; Michael (Ruth) WELSH of Hills, David (Kathy) WELSH of Waterloo, Patrick WELSH of Marshalltown, Troy (Wendy) DeVRIES, Todd DeVRIES, 2 daughters, Tammy (Mrs. Rodney) GREINER of Dinsdale, Mary WELSH (Chris CLOVER) of Ankeny, 1 brother; Eugene of Colorado, 2 sisters, Lucille TVEDT of Montour, Bernadette KLATT of Waterloo, and 6 grandchildren.

Due to the conditions at the cemetery, the family suggests that only immediate family will go to the committal service. Please proceed to the Country Club and the family will join you for the luncheon.
