BAKER, Irene (1916 - 1998)

A Funeral Mass for Irene BAKER, 82, of Decorah, and formerly of Traer, was celebrated Wednesday morning, July 29, 1998, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer. A scripture service was held Tuesday evening at the Overton Family Funeral Home in Traer. Burial was in the church cemetery.

She died Sunday, July 26, 1998, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah.

The Rev. John Tilp officiated the funeral service with music by Pat Sauer, organist.

Casket bearers were Donald Gates, Norman Chizek, Stan Hladik, Larry KOPRIVA, Arlen Williams and Joseph KOPRIVA. Mass cards were handled by Angie Gates and Carolyn Martin. Flowers were tended to by Mr. and Mrs. Jack Nagle and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Seda.

Irene BAKER was born in Laurens, Iowa, March 5, 1916, the daughter of John and Amelia (MESSMAN) KIRSCH.

On Nov. 24, 1935, she was united in marriage to Paul BAKER in Laurens. Irene and Paul moved to Traer in 1935 where Paul operated a barber shop on Main Street. The couple made Traer their home for the remainder of their married life.

Following Paul’s death Sept. 28, 1982, Irene continued to make her home in Traer until 1996 when she moved to the nursing home in Decorah.

She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, the Rosary Society and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was also an accomplished seamstress, enjoyed gardening and was always helpful to the members of her church and her friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; a daughter, Mary Bernadine KOPRIVA; one grandson, Stephen KOPRIVA and one granddaughter, LeAnne BAKER; five brothers and five sisters.

Surviving are her son and his wife, Larry and Norma Jean BAKER of Des Moines; one son-in-law, LeRoy KOPRIVA of Decorah; a former daughter-in-law, Norma BAKER-FOBIAN of Waterloo; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
