BENDA, Gary Fred (1945 - 2003)

Gary Fred BENDA, age 57, of Elberon was born on August 15, 1945, in Toledo, Iowa, the son of Fred and Irene WIRSTLIN-BENDA, and died on February 27, 2003 under the care of Mercy Hospice in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He attended South Tama County Community Schools.

On September 3, 1977, he was united in marriage to Phyllis ELSBURY at the Elberon Community Church. He farmed and owned BENDA Excavating. He was a Volunteer Fireman in Vining and was on the National Cemetery Board. His hobbies included watching NASCAR Racing and attending the Vinton stock car races. He also enjoyed spending time with his Uncle Bill.

He was preceded in death by his father Fred; and one sister, Linda BENDA.

He is survived by his wife Phyllis of Eberon; his mother, Irene BENDA of Tama; three daughters, Linda (Jeff) STEFFENS of Clutier, Denise KELSEY of Cedar Rapids, and Rhonda (Michael) POKORNY of Elberon; two brothers Dean (Maureen) BENDA of Elberon, and Wayne (Dee) BENDA of Elberon; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; five nieces; and two nephews.

A memorial fund has been established.
