Harold G. Turbett, 76, of 1410 Harding Street, well known retired insurance agent, teacher and Tama City Clerk, died Friday, April 5, 1985 in Marshalltown Area Community hospital, following major surgery on Thursday, March 28. He had been a patient in the hospital four weeks.
His body was donated to medical science and inurnment in Oak Hill Cemetery, Tama, will be held later. Estel-Perrin-Avey Funeral Home, Marsahlltown, has charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be directed to American Cancer Society.
Harold Graves Turbett was born April 1, 1909 in Toledo, son of Ervin G. and Meda Graves Turbett. He graduated from Toledo High school and from Iowa State College, Ames in 1929. He taught Industrial Arts at Fredericksburg from 1929 through 1934. He was also principal of Lovillia High school, principal of Elementary school in Gutherie Center and principal of Elementary school in Osage.
He married Isabelle C. Mikes of Fredericksburg in Waterloo Graves Memeorial Church on August 26, 1933.
In December, 1940, Mr. Turbett purchased the Evans Insurance Angency and with his wife, Isabelle, they operated the Turbbett Insurance Agency through 1971. Their office was located at McClellan and 13th streets. Mr. Turbett also taught in Tama and Toledo high schools half days, in the fornoon, with his wife doing the detail work at the insurance office.
He served as City Clerk of Tama from November, 1941 through December, 1948, and also served as Tama County weed commissioner, after leaving the City clerks position.
Mr. Turbett was a member of the Methodist church, past president of the Lion's Club and Tama-Toledo Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his wife, Isabelle, a daughter, Shirley (Mrs.Lyle E.) Johnston, Hiawatha, three granddaughters, LeAnn (Mrs. Thomas)Kadlec, Lombard, Ill., Susan (Mrs. Edward) Slattery, Cedar Rapids and Jolene Johnston, Jr. student at Iowa state College, Ames; His mother, Mrs Meda Turbett, resident at Sunny Hill Care Center, Tama, a sister Dorothy (Mrs. Harold) Rash and a brother Charles G. Turbett, both of Tama.
He was prceeded in death by his father, Ervin G. Turbett.
