From Ancestry.com's American Civil War Soldiers database:
James Bevington resided in New Philadelphia, Iowa (no longer in existence). He enlisted (Union) 29 Jul 1862 as a private at age 29. He was placed in Co A, 23rd IA Infantry Regiment on 21 Aug 1862 and died of disease 26 Aug 1863.Two other family collection records with a matching death date seem to indicate that he died on a boat on the Mississippi River. The city and county is listed as RCWOOD and there is a reference to "Lee Coia" in the country line which makes no sense to me but these might be clues for your research.
Hope that helps -- Tamara
