About 1905, A. S. Gifford took a boy, about 8 years old into his home who had arrived on an Orphan Train from New York City.
His name was Charles W. Hermance b. 29 May 1897 in Glenns Falls, New York.
The Gifford family did not adopt this child, but it is my understanding that since A. S. Gifford had only daughters, he ask Charles Hermance to use the name Gifford when he married Edna Lucille Clark on 1 Mar 1925 in Maxwell, IA. At least this is the story passed down in the family.
So, when they married, Edna Lucille Clark became Edna Lucille Gifford. Together, Charles and Edna had two sons who carried the Gifford surname.
Charles Hermance Gifford became known as "the man whith two names." However, for military and employment he continued to use the name Hermance.
I know very little about A. S. Gifford's family. His wife and children for instance.
I am trying to determine just when Charles Hermance arrived in the Gifford household.
Charles Hermance was my son's grandfather, and I am trying to find his roots for him.
Any ideas, anyone?
Thanks, Lola
