Early Day Building Report From Ames

AMES – Building seems to be the principal industry in Ames at present, and during the past few days, skeletons of houses are appearing in all quarters of the city. The Baker and Knudson brick blocks on main street are progressing nicely and the elegant new house of W. J. Semmons on Burnett street is inclosed [sic]. Dr. Aplin is moving his old house on Douglass street, and will erect a large modern residence on the old site. It is one of the best residence sites in the city and will make a fine home. The Hardy house on Boone street is under process of construction and the Fred Banks house on the same street is nearing completion. Marion Cupps has foundations laid for three houses on Northwestern street, and S. V. Kalsem for one on college road. K. W. Brown is moving his barn on North Kellogg street, across the street east to a vacant lot and will convert it into a house, and is also building an addition to his brick building on Main street, occupied by the J. E. Judge bakery. Harry Howard has purchased a lot on Clark street, of which W. J. Freed will begin erection of a house soon.
