THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, February 15, 2006.

Albert Jay Medford, 88, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Rolling Green Village, Nevada. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1416 20th Street, Ames.

Albert Jay Medford was born June 8, 1917, in Pomeroy, Ohio, to Addie White and Frank Medford. He grew up in Aledo, Ill., and attended the University of Arizona, Tucson, and graduated in 1939 with a degree in civil engineering.

He married Pauline Cabeen Aug. 5, 1939, in Aledo, Ill. To this union were born six children, Colleen Craig, of Phoenix, Brian Jay, of Florissant, Mo., Maryann Webb, of La Grange, Ill., Nancy Medford, of Palm Springs, Calif., Joyce Medford, of Indio, Calif., and Sally Medford, of Ames.

He was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church in Ames, serving on many committees and holding various positions throughout the years. He most recently was a treasurer with the Ames Good Neighbors Emergency Assistance and previously with the Ames Red Cross. He was an active member of the Ames Senior Mixed Bowling League.

He served as lt. commander in the U.S. Navy "Seabees" during World War II and then the U.S. Navy Reserve; he retired in 1977. He retired as director of the Federal Highway Administration in 1973, after 31 years as a civil engineer.

He is survived by his children; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Polly, in January 2004.

He will be remembered for his devotion and commitment to his marriage and family, his strong faith in God, his wonderful sense of humor and storytelling and his love of life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts will be made to Northminster Presbyterian Church, Department of Veterans Affairs or Good Neighbors Emergency Assistance.
