THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, January 5, 2006.

Joel Hansen, 45, of Huxley, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Israel Family Hospice in Ames of brain cancer. Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 6, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley with Rev. Tom Hilger officiating. Burial will be in Fjeldberg Church Cemetery.

Joel Hansen was born in Harlan to parents Charles and Marilyn (Westphalen) Hansen. He was a resident of the Huxley area since 1987. He received a bachelor's degree in psychology at the University of Iowa, a master's degree in horticulture and a Ph.D. in biochemistry, both from Iowa State University. He worked as a scientist at the Iowa State DNA Research Facility. He married Marcy Sager May 21, 1983, in Atlantic. He shared his musical gifts at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church, where he was a member.

He is survived by his wife, Marcy Hansen of Huxley; two sons, Jacob and Andrew, both of Huxley; his father, Charles Hansen of Atlantic; two brothers, Tom (Chris) Hansen of Marshfield, Wis., and Derek Hansen of Elk Horn; his mother-in-law, Evelyn Sager of Atlantic; and many other dear family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn; his paternal grandparents, Emanuel and Martha Hansen; his maternal grandparents, Arnold and Erma Westphalen; and his father-in-law Harvey Sager.

Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m.

Memorials are requested to Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater, is in charge of arrangements.
