Vernon White, 87, longtime Rhodes resident, most recently of the Regency Retirement Community in Nevada, died Sunday morning, December 4th, his home while in care of hospice. His death came peacefully at 9:00 A.M. with his family at his side.
Funeral services and a celebration of his life were held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 10th, at the Rhodes united Methodist Church with Rev. Jeffrey R. Frese officiating. He was laid to rest in the Eden Cemetery at Rhodes. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Memorials may be directed to the Rhodes United Methodist Church or Homeward Hospice. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown (641-844-1234) cared for Vernon and his family.
Born on September 4th, 1918, near Melbourne, Iowa, he was the son of Harry and Martha (Bollhoefer) White. He lived in the Rhodes and Melbourne area until moving to Nevada two years ago. He graduated from the Rhodes High School in 1936 and was engaged in farming all of his life.
On February 28th, 1941, he was united in marriage to Lucile Huntrods. Mr. White was a member of the Rhodes United Methodist Church and had worked with the Boy Scouts and 4-H clubs.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years and four children: Marlys (Dennis) Mitchell of Buckingham, Iowa, Patricia (Stephen) Johnson of Quito, Ecuador, John White of Rhodes and Carol (Jim) Hornby of Black River Falls, Wisconsin; eleven grandchildren: Susan (Tom) Burzlaff of Muscatine, Iowa, Paul (Tammi) Mitchell of Waterloo, Iowa, Linda (Brian) Horn of Madrid, Iowa, Robin Johnson (Michael Tavel) of Denver, CO., Jale (Brett) Kenney of Coos Bay, OR., Peri Johnson (Omur) Harmansah of Portland, OR., Vachel White of Rhodes, Iowa, Emile White of Chandler, AZ., Amy (Oscar) Uribe of Pflugerville, TX., Jason Hornby of Milwaukee, WI., and Cara (Paul) Gilbertson of Osceola, WI., and 13 great-grandchildren.
