He graduated from Clear Lake High School and later joined his parents and brother in Mingo. The family then moved to Cambridge, where it owned and operated Gardner's Garage. In 1954, he was appointed to the Cambridge Post Office as postmaster, where he served until he retired in 1978.

He was past chief of Cambridge Volunteer Fire Department, as well as past president of Story County Firemen's Assoc. He served as councilman and city clerk of Cambridge. He was past master of Tabernacle Masonic lodge as well as past Worthy Patron of Order of the Eastern Star, New Hope Chapter. His other activities included National Association of Postmasters of the U.S.; member of the National League of Postmasters and past president of Tri-County Postmasters. He was a member of Cambridge United Methodist Church, where he was a choir member, member of the official board and a Sunday school teacher.

Following retirement, Leland and Neoma enjoyed their lake home in Minnesota during the summer, but always looked forward to their trip to Apache Jct., Ariz., spending the winter with their many friends in Bonita Vista Park. Fishing, dancing and playing cards were just a few of the many things he enjoyed. They also enjoyed the many trips taken with their Air Stream trailer. He served for many years as chairman of the park association in Arizona. In 2004, he moved to Ballard Creek in Huxley, where he had many friends.

He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Gardner of Bondurant; and one son Lawrence (Larry) L. Gardner of Bondurant.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Neoma; and his beloved brother, Lawrence E. Gardner. His enjoyment of life and his great spirit live on in the great memories we all have of Leland.
