THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, November 22, 2005.

Beatrice C. Howerton, 85, of Ames died Monday, Nov. 21, at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 25, at Bethesda Lutheran Church with Rev. Randy Gehring officiating. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Beatrice C. Howerton was born Aug. 13, 1920, in Story City to Torger Erickson and Hanna (Wisted) Rafdal. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Chruch. She was a graduate of Story City High School. She worked as a sales clerk at Younkers for 23 years; prior to that, she was a telephone operator in Story City. She married William Jackson Howerton June 9, 1943, in Story City. She was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church, was a volunteer at Mary Greeley Medical Center, Heartland Health Center and Willson Beardshear School.

She is survived by two daughters, JoAnn (Paul) Sandoval of Ames and Linda (Greg) Randolph of Gladbrook; two sons, Gary (Janet) Howerton of Tucson, Ariz., and Greg Howerton (friend, Brenda) of Sierra Vista, Ariz; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four brothers, Elwood Rafdal of Des Moines, Alton Rafdal of Des Moines and Albert Rafdal and Donald Rafdal of Indianapolis; and two sisters, Margaret Twedt of Roland and Gladys Waugh of Roland.

She was preceded in death by parents; her husband; and one brother, Clarence Rafdal.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 24, at Adams Funeral Home.

Memorials are requested to Bethesda Lutheran Church Missions, Homeward Hospice or Bethany Manor.
