From Story City Herald June 6, 1940 (page 6)

MRS. ENGEL HOUGLAND

Engel Katherine Askelson, the daughter of Sampson and Sella Donhowe Askelson, was born in Clinton county, Iowa, on February 17, 1867, and passed away in Story City, Iowa on May 26, 1940, at the age of 73 years, 3 months and 9 days.

Her family were early settlers in Story county, Iowa. In 1892 she was married to E. J. Hougland. Eight children were born to this marriage. Three of them Sophie, Sanford and Selma died in infancy. The five surviving children are two daughters, Mrs. V. A. Helfenstein of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Mrs. G. A. Rosenfeld of Harlan, Iowa, and three sons, Neil of Omaha, Clifford and Howard of New York City. Others of her immediate family are one sister, Mrs. T. L. Olson of Story City, and five brothers, Nels, George and Sam of Gilbert, Oscar and Albert of Story City. She also leaves fond memories in the lives of 7 grandchildren and 13 nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hougland had been in failing health for the past 10 years, but only since January of this year had her condition seemed critical.

The visit to earth of such a good spirit is short indeed. But while here she ministered to the needy, comforted the unfortunate, sand and rejoiced when good fortune smiled. Her life was full and her generosity and kindness unfailing.

Her steadfast faith in her Saviour and the life beyond makes everyone feel that it is best for her soul to be spared the ravages of disease which have affected her recently.
