SARAH JOHNSON

Mrs. Sarah Johnson, a pioneer mother, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. T. Eness on Tuesday morning, May 28, 1940, after a long life being exactly 97 years, and 6 months and 24 days. She had been bedridden the past eight years due to the infirmities of old age.

Sarah Musland was born in Kvinherred, Norway, Nov. 4, 1842, her parents were Jens and Sarah Musland. She was baptized and confirmed in the homeland and married Lars Johnson in the year 1868. To this union were born eleven children. In 1872 she, with her husband and three small children came to America on July 4, having been on the ocean for 8 weeks. They settled at Calamus, Clinton county, Iowa and made their home there. Mr. Johnson died in the year 1888. In the year 1891, she, together with her family, moved to the Cambridge neighborhood where she made her home.

Since the year 1895, she has made her home with her children.

She has been a Christian all her life, always interested in the kingdom of God, the Ladies Aid and other mission work, and the welfare of her children has always been of keen interest to her.

Two sons passed away in infancy, namely Martin and Helmer. Two daughters have preceded their mother, namely Mrs. Sarah Christiansen and Mrs. Minnie Johnson, leaving two granddaughters who made their home with her.

She outlived all her sisters and brothers: they were Mrs. John Musland and Mrs. Lars Petersen in this country, and two sisters and two brothers in Norway.

She leaves to mourn her death the following children: Mrs. Christine Robinson of Grand Mound, Iowa, James L. Johnson of St. James, Minn., Hans J. Johnson of Butterfield, Minn., Chris L. Johnson and L. S. Johnson of Story City, Mrs. Lou T. Eness of Ames and Mrs. Martin J. Nelson of Cambridge.
