FORMER RESIDENT DIED IN CHICAGO

Mrs. Maria B. Jacobs (nee Olson), Fatally Injured in Fall Near Lake.

Mrs. Maria B. Jacobs, one of the pioneer residents of Story City, died in Chicago Wednesday evening, August 1, according to word received from relatives.

Death was evidently due to a fall, as when she was found near the lake, she had a bad gash on her head from a stone. She had been living for some time with her son Edwin. She had the habit of going out for a walk and on the day of her death she had evidently gone down to the lake to enjoy the cool breeze on a very hot day. Whether she had become dizzy, or was asleep or had stumbled, is not known, but it i thot death was almost immediate. The body was found the next day by a passing cyclist, who reported to the police, who had been notified of her disappearance and wee looking for her.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 7, with the Brethren Mission in charge, and interment was made in the Oakwoods cemetery.

Lived Many Years Here

Mrs. Jacobs lived many years in Story City having come here with her parents shortly after the Civil war.

Maria Olson conducted a millinery and dress making establishment up to the time she married Nels B. Jacobs, who then was proprietor of a meat market here. They moved to Chicago in the early 90's and Mr. Jacobs was the head of a commission firm at the stock yards until the time of his death.

Mrs. Jacobs was 83 years old July 7th. For a number of years she had lived alone, but for the past year head made her home with her son Edwin. By nature she was reticent and of a kindly disposition. The writer (the editor) lived at her home in Chicago for more than a year and remembers her as a woman of more than ordinary ability, both as a manager of her home and a planner in business. She is survived by her son Edwin of Chicago and step-son Carl of Shelby, Miss., besides her sister, Mrs. Julia Nelson of Morris, Ill.
