Thomas J. Klungtvedt

Thomas J. Klungtvedt was born August 17, 1834, by parents Johannes Johanneson Klungtvedt and Ranvek Hustopt of Nerstrand, Norway.

He came to America in the spring of the year 1868. He stayed in the neighborhood of Roland, Iowa, and was married to Martha Michaelson of Nerstrand, Norway in the fall of 1868. They settled at Roland for a few years where Mr. Klungtvedt taught parochial school for a number of terms.

Later he built a home on the prairie, having a few cows, and worked at any work that he had. Later he bought an 80 acre farm in Hardin county which they kept for several years. In a few years he sold this farm and moved south of McCallsburg where he purchased a 120 acre farm and lived there a number of years.

As they advanced in age they retired from the farm and moved to McCallsburg, where they lived until the fall of 1909.

They traded their town property for a farm in Winnebago county, Iowa, near Thompson, which was sold and they purchased a residence in Thompson, where they lived until his wife died on May 18, 1921.

Mr. Klungtvedt continued to live alone, until he had the misfortune to fall and hurt his hip, on the way to church. From this he never recovered. After this accident he was at the home of his sister Mrs. M. B. Oftedal, where he received medical attention and best of care, until he improved so he could be up and around with the aid of crutches. He wished to make his home with his son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. John T. Johnson, where he stayed until his death. There he was under good care, and he was thankful for all they did for him. His health gradually failed until two weeks ago he had a stroke, and another followed in a few days, which left him helpless, when his heart failed and caused his death Friday. He was laid to rest beside his wife in Rosehill cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Klungtvedt were blessed with eight children, three died several years ago.

Mr. Klungtvedt was a respected Christian always willing to give a helping hand to church activities. He leaves to mourn his loss, four daughters and one son, John T. Johnson of Scarville, Mrs. Sam Simmons of Roland, Mrs. Jack Grant of Tacoma, Wash., Mrs. Ed Christiansen of Fosston, Minn., and Mrs. Carl Monson of Mylo, N. D. Also two brothers and one sister, B. K. Johnson of Story City, Andres Johaneson Vigness, of Ralstad Finno, Norway and Mrs. M. B. Oftedal of Thompson.
