Obituary

Pleasant W. Bishop was born April 6th, 1832, in Carroll county, Indiana. Died at his home near Gilbert January 30, 1918.

William G. Bishop and Rebecca Briggs Bishop moved to Money Creek township, McLain Co., Ill., in 1836. This farm remained his home for 72 years. Here he attended school in a log schoolhouse built the year following the arrival of his family in McLain Co.

From the country school he went to Wesleyan University at Bloomington, Ill., where he graduated. He was married April 20, 1853 to Amelia Ann Timmons, a native of Ohio. To this union was born a family of eight children, three daughters and five sons, seven of whom are still living, one daughter having died at the age of 16 years.

At his country's call Mr. Bishop enlisted Aug. 25th, 1862 in Co. D, 94th Illinois Infantry and served until October, 1863, when he was transferred to the 37th Illinois as chaplain which he served until October, 1864.

For bravery on the field of battle at Prairie Grove, Ark., Dec. 7, 1862, he was presented with a gold watch at a State encampment held at Bloomington after the war.

P. W. Bishop became a Christian when about 16 years old, after his marriage he set his heart on the gospel ministry for which he gave some time in special preparation and was ordained a minister in the Presbyterian church 1- April 1862. He was also a teacher of many years experience. He was a busy man teaching, preaching and looking after his farm interests.

The wife and mother of his children died July 19, 1886, and was buried in Zion cemetery, McLain Co., Ill.

Mr. Bishop was the last of a family of ten children. He was an enthusiastic member of the Masonic fraternity and endeavored to shape his life and live on the square with all men.

Pleasant W. Bishop died Jan. 30, 1918 at his home near Gilbert. Funeral services held at his home on Tuesday afternoon 2 o'clock by Rev. Wissler of the Congregational church. Remains were taken to Towanda, Ill., for burial.
