OBITUARY

Private Clifford Cate

Clifford Cate was born near Story City, October 10, 1897, and died at Camp Cody, Deming, N. M., February 1, 1918, aged 20 years, 3 months and 21 days. The cause of death was an attack of pneumonia.

Clifford enlisted in the United States army April 5th at 5:30 p.m. The next morning at 2 a.m. war was declared with Germany. On July 13th he was called into the service at Boone, Ia. Sept. 1 he left with the 1st separate company for Deming, N. M., where he was taken down with pneumonia.

The deceased was a son of Mrs. Mary Bickelhaupt, of west of Story City. His father, Chas. E. Cate, has been living in Canada for a dozen years or so. Besides the mother, Clifford leaves a sister, stepfather, an aged grandmother, two step-brothers and numerous relatives and friends to mourn his early demise. One of his step-brothers, Harry Bickelhaupt, is at the front in France, having sailed at Christmas time.
