Obituary of A. S. Anderson

A. S. Anderson was born near Stavanger, Norway, April 9, 1848, his parents being Gunder Hoversten (born 1812) and Anders Anderson (born 1813), and he died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Annes Swenson, near Ellsworth, Feb. 21, 1928, at the age of 79 years, 10 months and 12 days.

He came to America in 1858, when he was ten years old, with his mother and sister and brother. They settled at Fox River, Ill. In the spring of 1873 he came to Iowa, settling in Hamilton county.

On Oct. 1, 1875, he was united in marriage to Jennie Soren, and together they settled on the place which was to be their home for so many years, ten miles northwest of Story City. Here they were among the early pioneers, and aided in the organization of the St. Pauli Norwegian Lutheran church, of which he was a faithful and valued member until moving to Story City in the fall of 1915 he became a member of the Immanuel congregation.

His marriage was blessed with nine children, two of whom (Anne and Anders) died in infancy. Mrs. Anderson died May 14, 1923. The children left to mourn his death are Lewis of Blue Earth, Minn.; Mrs. M. E. Swenson and Mrs. Annes Swenson of Ellsworth; Arthur of Story City; Richard of Randall; Benjamin of Jewell and Julius of Des Moines. There are 19 grand children, and his brothers M. A. Anderson of Radcliffe and E. P. Anderson of Story City, besides a host of old time friends who mourn the departure of a man of sterling character.

The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon. Rev. T. T. Heimarck had charge of the same, being assisted at the Swenson home by Rev. Naglestad of Ellsworth and in Immanuel church by Rev. Hans Oppedal of the St. Pauli congregation. The Clear Lake octet and Prof. Martin sang in the church. Beautiful floral tributes attested the love and esteem in which the deceased pioneer was held. The five sons and one son-in-law acted as pall bearers.

The body was laid to rest beside that of his beloved wife in the Fairview cemetery of this place.
