Thomas L. Divine, 70, died Monday, Oct. 17 surrounded by his family at his home in Ames. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church.
Tom was born Sept. 25, 1935, in Beloit, Wis., to William and Lavinia Divine. He was raised in Beloit and attended the Brother Dutton school and graduated from Beloit Memorial High School. After a brief stint as a professional golfer, he received a degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1958 and served a tour of duty in the U.S. Army. He married Nancy Knight of Dalton, Wis., in 1962. They moved to Ames in 1965, where Tom worked first as manager of the Sherwin-Williams paint store and then as a sales representative for the Williamson-Dickie company. He was best known for his career in the Piper Jaffray brokerage office, where he began in 1983 and advanced to the positions of branch manager and managing director of investments. Nancy died in 2000; he married Linda Herwehe of Des Moines in 2004.
He took on many roles in his life: father, husband, mentor, community leader, financial adviser, churchgoer and golfer. His family will remember him as a man who expressed his love through sacrifice and hard work, as a father and husband who expended great effort to aid the success and happiness of his children. His friends in the golfing community will remember him as a tough competitor who always was ready for a joke, a glass of beer and a game of cards at the end of the round. The many people who knew him through his work, church and involvement in community organizations will remember him for his generosity and his sincere concern for the well-being of others.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy; an infant son in 1963, his father in 1976 and his mother in 2000.
He is survived by his wife, Linda; one brother, Dave of Lowell, Mich.; his children, Dan of Ames, Cathy Divine-Koch of Iowa City, Mike of Pittsburgh, Jim of Minneapolis and Susan of Tucson, Ariz.; one stepson, Neil Martin of Oakley, Calif.; two grandchildren, Anna and Julia; and two step-grandchildren, Caleb and Garrick. Tom touched a multitude of lives during his time on earth and leaves a legacy of kindness, love and charity.
A visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at St. Cecilia. Memorial contributions may be made to the MGMC Foundation, c/o William Bliss Cancer Center.
