THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, October 19, 2005.

Fred J. Bennett Jr., 86, of Boone, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone. Following the service, his body will be cremated, and graveside services and burial of his cremains will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone
Fred was born Sept. 15, 1919, in Des Moines. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines in 1938. He graduated from Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines in 1941. From 1942-56, he was an accountant, factory worker, assistant sales manager and achieved the position of assistant general manager-purchasing agent at Percival Manufacturing in Boone. In 1956, he moved to Denver, Colo., and was vice president of Refrigeration, Inc. retiring in 1988.

He married Lois Holm of Boone Dec. 30, 1947, in Phoenix . She died in 1989. He returned to Boone. He married Kelli Ann Doherty Dec. 9, 1989, in Denver. He was a past president of the Boone Chamber of Commerce and was active in the Y.M.C.A., Eagles, Kiwanis Club, Toastmaster Club and Jaycees, all in Boone. He also was a past president for the Iowa Jaycees and a national director for the United States Jaycees. He held a lifetime office as senator in Junior Chamber International with membership No. 86 and was one of the founding members of this worldwide organization.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois, and one brother, Lloyd.

He is survived by his wife, Kelli of Boone; two sons, John (Paula) Bennett of Aurora, Colo., and Robert (Tracy) Bennett of Basalt, Colo.; two daughters, Margaret (David) Hornberger and Carole Bennett, all of Indianapolis; one granddaughter, Taylor Bennett; two grandsons, Jason and Adam Hornberger; two stepdaughters, Elizabeth (Ben) Matthies and Katherine (Ryan) Boon, all of Boone; his father-in-law, Dan Doherty of Boone; one nephew, Skip Bennett of Georgetown, Colo., and two nieces, Callen Bennett of Des Moines and Judy Anderson and husband, Tom Leffler of Johnston; and several cousins.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 today at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall streets in Boone, where the family will be present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Visitation continues from 8 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel and then from 1:30 to time of service at the church. Memorials may be given to establish the Fred J. Bennett, Jr. Scholarship Fund.
