Erick J. Peterson
Erick J. Peterson was born at Savereide, Norway, June 10, 1835, and died at the hospital in Story City, Jan. 21, 1925, at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 11 days.
His parents were Peder Johannes Savereide and Engel Eriksdater. He was baptized and confirmed in Skaanevig prestegjeld, Norway.
At the age of twenty-one, April 8, 1856, he immigrated to America, settling at Lisbon, Ill. He enlisted as a private in the civil war, joining Co. E of the 91st regiment of Illinois infantry, Aug. 11, 1862, and served until April 13, 1865, or to the end of the war.
Following his discharge from the army Mr. Peterson moved to Iowa, where he brought a farm a mile north of Story City, which became his home until he moved to town a few years ago.
June 14, 1866, he was married to Julia C. Johnson, the marriage ceremony being performed by Rev. N. Amlund. Twelve children were born to this union, namely: Michael and Peter of Wyoming, Erick and Gerhard of Minnesota, Carolina and Margaret of Des Moines, Mary, Julia, Hannah and Sarah are all living around Story City; Peter died at the age of 12 years and another son died in infancy.
Mrs. Peterson passed to the great beyond April 20, 1920. Mr. Peterson was living at the home of his daughter when taken ill. He was taken to the hospital where he came down with pneumonia. With his lowered vitality and old age he was unable to resist this disease.
Funeral services were held Monday in the St. Petri church, of which he had been a long and active member. Rev. Andersen officiated.
In the passing of Mr. Peterson the community loses another one of its very oldest pioneers and one who in many ways contributed to its upbuilding. May he rest in peace.
