Obituary

Ulysses Grant Myers was born in Pleasant Hill, Ohio, February 11, 1865, and passed out of this life in Iowa City, Iowa, October 18, 1924, bein at the time of his death 59 years, 8 months and 7 days of age.

In his young manhood he was in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad, serving as freight conductor on a run out of Chicago to Logansport, Ind., for 12 years.

April 28, 1892, he was united in marriage to Miss Lena Lein of Story City, whom he met in Chicago. The first nine years of their wedded life was spent in Ohio, when they moved to Story City, Iowa, where they have resided for nearly 23 years, during which time he was engaged in the shoe repair business.

He was a man who had opinions that were decidedly his own, and was always free to express them, but he was also positively free from hypocrisy. For the past ten years he and gradually failed in health and this ofttimes caused him to become irritable, so that his nearest friend felt at times the loss of that genial spirit he possessed when in good health. In spite of his failing health he still labored at time beyond his failing strength.

During little more than the past year he was compelled to set aside his shop work and seek medical aid in real earnest. After being informed by his physician that he was smitten by that dread disease cancer of the liver, he did not give up, but continued to make a heroic fight for life. Although away from home during his last days some one of the members of the family was almost constantly as his bedside.

He never united with any church, but in early life had strong leanings toward the Presbyterian church. While in Story City he greatly delighted in having his children faithfully attend and support the Grace Evangelical church, even though he himself came very seldom.

He leaves to mourn his loss his wife and seven children, namely Mrs. Ethel Stull, Violet, Lowell and Grant of Ames, Milford and Mrs. Mary Keyser of Cedar Rapids, and George H. of Los Angeles, Calif. One daughter died in infancy. One brother and two sisters also survive him.

Funeral services were held in the Grace church at this place Tuesday afternoon, Revs. Orth and Wendel officiating, and interment was made in Fairview cemetery. All the children were present, except Harry, who is in Los Angeles, Cal., and could not get here. A sister of the deceased, Mrs. Miller, was also present from Ohio, and local friends of the deceased filled the auditorium of the church.
