From The Slater News January 9, 1929 (page 5)

MRS. SERINE VOLD AUESTAD

Mrs. Serine Vold Auestad was born in LaSalle county, Illinois, on the 6th day of September, 1857, of parents, Ole and Bertha Vold. The family moved from Illinois to Iowa in the spring of 1865, taking up their residence on a homestead six miles southwest of Cambridge in Polk county. There she grew to womanhood and lived till the spring of 1896, when the family moved to Slater.

She was married to Haktor Auestad on July 18, 1899, and continued to make Slater her home till death called her on January 2, 1929, at an age of 71 years, 3 months and 26 days. She is mourned by the bereft husband, Haktor Auestad; two sisters, Mrs. Susie Anderson and Mrs. Marie Clark; two brothers, Martin Wald of Whittemore, Iowa, and S. O. Wald of Slater. Also five stepchildren. They are Mrs. Ida Peterson of Sheldahl, Mrs. Belle Larson of Albin, Wyoming, Mrs. Sarah Heggen of Slater, Herman Auestad of Des Moines and Andrew Auestad of Kensett, Iowa. Also many other relatives and friends.

Many pleasant memories will linger in connection with the life activities of the deceased, who from her early youth was an ardent Christian, an active church worker. During her residence southwest of Cambridge she was a very active worker in Palestine church, of which she was a member previous to coming to Slater. Her efforts in behalf of the Sunday school, the choir and other branches of the church were untiring. While illness cut short her activities in later years, her interest never waned and she was a regular attendant at all church services as long as health and strength would permit her.

She was not only an earnest Christian, but also a loving and devoted wife and mother, sister and friend and the kindest of neighbor, and the world is sweeter because of her having lived.
