Last Rites Held for Wm. Van Gundy, 83
Funeral rites for Wm. (Bill) Van Gundy were held Friday afternoon of last week at the United Methodist Church in Slater. The Rev. Ralph Hindman officiated. He took his text from meditations from the 23rd Psalm.
Lester Moore, soloist, sang two selections, "In the Garden" and "Under His Wing." He was accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Paul G. Hall.
Pallbearers were Harley Moore, Lester Moore, Shelby Chader, Howard Mason, Milford Ryen and Morrill Nervig.
Interment was in the Slater Municipal Cemetery, south of town.
Obituary
William Van Gundy was born on Sept. 1, 1887 at Spencer, Ia., the son of the late Pastor and Mrs. John W. Van Gundy. His boyhood was spent in Boone, but he had lived in the Slater community since he was a very young man.
He was united in marriage on Aug. 18, 1910 to Miss Hattie House of Kelley, at the Methodist parsonage in Nevada, Ia. To this union was born one daughter, Myrtle.
The Van Gundys made their home in Slater where Bill was employed by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad for many years until his retirement. He also served as town marshal and Palestine Township constable for a number of years.
Mr. Van Gundy was a long-time member of the Methodist Church in Slater and had served as a member of the official board and the board of trustees for many years. He was also interested in civic affairs and was a charter member of the Slater Community Club.
He died at the Story County Hospital in Nevada on Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 2 p. m. He had been in failing health for a number of years and was a patient at Oak Park Manor in Nevada since last August.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie, who passed away in 1967, his parents, two sisters and a brother.
He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Kline, of Nevada; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Lincoln, of Centralia, Wis.; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Harris of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Mrs. Clyde Inman of Lake Worth, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
