John Houge's Sudden Death

Passed Away Thursday Night at the Home of a Daughter West of Ames

John Houge, former Slater resident and well known in the Slater community, died very suddenly last Friday night at the home of his daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Helmar Dahl, who live on an acreage immediately west of Ames, where he was spending a few days visiting. When he failed to get up in the morning they went to call him, only to find him dead. Death had claimed him while he was asleep as the result of a heart attack, it is thought. He had been making his home with another daughter, Mrs. Ed Erickson, for some time, but had gone over to the Dahl home for a visit. He had been in his usual good health.

Funeral services were held from the Lutheran church at Ames on Sunday afternoon, with his pastor, the Rev. Amos Stolen, in charge. He was assisted by Rev. Rorem of Slater and Rev. Buland of the Palestine church, the latter using the Norwegian selection by Walter Christopher, "Den Store Hvide Flok Vi Se." Burial was made in the Ames cemetery.

Deceased was born near Lisbon, Illinois, October 16, 1854. He and his parents were members of the colony that moved to Iowa from Illinois the following year, 1855. He grew to manhood, was married and made his home in southern Story for many years, most of the time being spent in the Slater community. Following the death of his wife ten years ago he had made his home with his children living at Ames.

He is survived by two sons, Henry of Atlantic, Iowa, and Ole of northwest of Slater, and by four daughters. They are Mrs. Andrew Dahl, Mrs. Helmar Dahl, Mrs. Ed Erickson and Mrs. Verna Cole, all of Ames. Also four brothers and a sister--Severt, Joe and George of the Slater community, and Anfin of McCloud, North Dakota, and Mrs. Brit Christopher of Jackson, Minn. Also many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Deceased was blessed with a happy disposition. He loved to have friends and enjoyed meeting them. He ill be greatly missed.
