MAGDALENA SCHONHORST

Grew To Womanhood in the Land of Her Birth, But Made America Her Home.

Mrs. Magdalena Schonhorst, wife of Henry H. Schonhorst, was born at Heinebach, Germany, on the 8th day of August, 1863. She was baptized, reared in the Christian faith and grew to womanhood in the land of her birth. At the age of twenty-one she came to America, accompanying an uncle who had been back to Germany on a visit. His home was at Wheeling, West Virginia.

In 1885, on the 8th day of September, she was united in marriage to Henry H. Schonhorst. To this union were born nine children. They were Mrs. Freda Fessler of Swaledale, Mrs. Anna Nelson of Sheldahl, Mrs. Lydia Hoppe of Ankeny, Mrs. Katie Skinner of High Bridge and Clara and Emma and Edwin of Sheldahl. Two sons, Edwin and Herman, preceded the mother into the great beyond where there is no more sorrow or pain. Both died at an early age.

In 1886 the Schonhorsts came to Iowa with their parents and settled down to establish their home in the community of Sheldahl, where they reared their family and lived happily together. In 1920 the deceased took sick with the flu, which terminated in bronchial asthma. She suffered intensely at times, but was in her usual health when the last summons came. On March 25th she was feeling fairly well. After eating a hearty dinner she walked into the dining room and in less than fifteen minutes she passed away to be with her Saviour and Redeemer. Her earthly pilgrimage was 63 years, 7 months and 17 days.

Funeral took place on the 29th from the Salem Reformed church at Alleman. Her suggestion before her death was that her funeral text be from Isaiah 43, 1--"Fear not, I have redeemed thee; I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine."

She is mourned by her husband, seven children, two sisters, seventeen grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

The pall bearers at the funeral were the daughters, Fred Fessler, Anna Nelson, Clara Schonhorst, Katie Skinner, Lydia Hoppe and Emma Schonhorst. Four grandchildren were flower bearers, Anna and Emma Fessler and Marie and Lydia Mosebach.
