Obituary.

Mrs. Anna Serine Heggem died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Malinda A. Thompson, three miles south of LeGrand, Marshall county, Iowa, Saturday, September 23, at an age of ninety years and three months.

She was born at Jelmeland Sogn, Norway, in 1826 and emigrated to America in 1854, taking up her residence at Nettle Creek, Illinois, where she was united in marriage to Mr. Peter Christian Heggem, the same year. The next spring, May 16th, 1855, they moved to Iowa, reaching Cambridge the 7th day of June. They bought a farm northwest of the present site of Huxley where they made their home, rearing a family and developed a fine farm. Her husband died in the fall of 1898. She continued to make the place her home till 1902 when she moved to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Malinda Thompson, near LeGrand, Iowa, where she lived at the time of her death. Deceased was the mother of seven children who with a host of other relatives and friends survive her. The children are Tom Olai and Severin of Slater, Oliver of Minneapolis, Peter of Longmont, Colorado, Mrs. Isabelle and Mrs. Malinda Thompson of LeGrand, Iowa and Anna Anfinson of Nevada.

Being a member of the early colonists that settled this part of the state, deceased had taken an important and active part in the early struggles of pioneering and had lived to see the then wild prairie transformed from grasslands to a settlement, dotted with beautiful homes. She was an earnest christian and as such passed into the great beyond when called by death on the 23rd. She had a host of warm friends who will remember her as a death neighbor, kind and willing to lend a helping hand.
