From Ames Times, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, June 16th, 1904.

Henry Barnes

Mr. Henry Barnes died at his home in Gilbert Thursday night at 11 o'clock, after of illness of some time. The writer of these lines has not the data at hand to write of this man as we would like. Our acquaintance with him has been but a passing acquaintance, but we have always found him to be an able man of strong mind and of strong convictions and beliefs, but whatever these beliefs, deceased was honest. He was a sturdy man, an educated man, a man who had met and fought the battles of life through sunshine and through darkness, and arrived at the end of life's journey at the age of eighty years., where he could look back and say that he had lived a life that was not in vain. His wife passed to the great beyond about a year prior to his death, and since her demise Mr. Barnes has been in failing health. Five children, all grown to man's estate, survive him. Services were held at the home of a daughter, conducted by Rev. Dunton who did not preach a sermon but made a talk on the life of deceased and of the beauties of life and the mysteries of death. Mr. Dunton's remarks were certainly timely and good. At the grave Arcadia Lodge, A F & A M of Ames, conducted its ritual services and the remains of this good man were laid to rest in the Gilbert cemetery.
