Edna Grace Ekstrom, 90, of Ames, died Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
She was born March 31, 1915, in Cannon Falls, Minn., the daughter of Swan Ednard (S.E.) and Ida (nee: Wederstrom) Benson. She was united in marriage June 25, 1938. to Carl H. Ekstrom in Cannon Falls. After graduating from high school, she attended Cannon Falls Normal School for one year and earned her teacher's certificate. She taught in country school for 4 years. She then was employed by Lutheran Evangelism Book Store in Minneapolis for 30 years. She was a member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Ames. She had taught vacation Bible school and Sunday school at Trinity Lutheran Church of Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis for many years. She enjoyed reading and was a gracious hostess. During World War II, she hosted Sunday dinners for servicemen, and also hosted many missionaries.She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Catherine Ekstrom of Washburn, Wis.; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Jon-Scott Johnson of Ames; her grandchildren, Solveig (and Trent) Rice of Ames, Kjersten (and Simon) Barrett of Peregian Beach, Australia, David (and Jodi Polzin) Richfield of Minneapolis, and Helen Richfield (Russell Hendlin) of San Geronimo, Calif.; and her great-grandchildren, Natalie and Ethan Barrett, Annika and Kaija Rice, Veronica and Sarah Richfield, and Amanda and Lily Hendlin.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three brothers, Bernie, Al and George Benson; and three sisters, Irene Ekstrom, Lucille Nelson and Viola Kvamme.
Edna was a loving wife and mother and a dedicated Christian. She will be remembered for her kindness toward all and her great sense of humor.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St Andrew's Lutheran Church in Ames. The Cremation Society of Eastern-Central-Western Iowa is assisting with the arrangements.
