Brian was born March 13, 1968, in San Luis Obispo, Calif., to Dexter and Lynda McDonald. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and soccer player and had a wonderful love of life. His younger years consisted of many different organized and pick-up sports games. Several times a year the family would travel to Lake San Antonio in California for fishing, camping and water skiing. His soccer years consisted of many years of playing AYSO, CYSA and Buena High School soccer, where he excelled and later found himself playing semi-pro ball. Southern California was always his home even though he lived throughout the state of California as well as Maine, Pennsylvania, Oregon and finally Iowa. He found himself even more blessed in becoming a loving husband upon his marriage to Jill Thompson on Oct. 26, 2002, in Ventura, Calif. On the day of the marriage, he became a wonderful father to Hailey Day (step-daughter).

He is survived by his wife, Jill McDonald and daughter, Hailey Day, of Ames; his parents, Dexter and Lynda McDonald of Ventura, Calif.; one sister, Kathy (and husband Shawn) Lewis of Ventura, Calif.; two brothers Chris (and wife Lisa) McDonald-Doxsee of Napa, Calif., and Steve McDonald (and partner Juliana Dixon) of Arcata, Calif; his paternal grandmother, Mary McDonald of Goleta, Calif.; his maternal grandmother, Shirley Smartis of Grass Valley, Calif.; his father and mother-in-law, Duane and Sue Thompson of Iowa City; and sister-in-law Toni Thompson of Magnolia, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Rolla McDonald, and his maternal grandfather Ray Smartis.

Brian is loved very much by those he left behind in this life on his journey to heaven.
