MRS. BAUGE IS LAID TO REST
Aged Pioneer Woman, Member of First Colony, Buried Wednesday--Close to 92
From the Palestine church on Wednesday, February 13th, took place the funeral service over the remains of Mrs. Carrie Bauge, who died at her home west of Cambridge on Friday, February 8th. Her pastor, Rev. Bueland, was in charge and delivered a very strong sermon, in which he paid a splendid tribute to the memory of the deceased, the community's oldest citizen and devoted member of the church, Besides some very appropriate number by the choir, there were vocal solos by Mrs. Thor Mason and Mrs. Chas. Hennick. A profusion of flowers added further to the beautiful services. Burial was made in the family lot in the cemetery adjoining the church, where the remains of her husband are resting.
The pallbearers were L. A. Porter, Ole Dobbe, Harry Wee, Lewis Stockdale, Charley Reinertson and Lewis Skaar.
Mrs. Carrie Bauge was born in Etne, Norway, May 18, 1837, reaching an age of 91 years, 8 months and 21 days. When 12 years old she accompanied her parents to America. They took up their residence at Leland, Ill. Her marriage to Knute Bauge took place in 1853. Two years later, in 1855, they became member of the first colony of settlers that moved out from Lisbon and located near what is now the Palestine church.
She took an active interest in the development of the community from the first and saw the transformation of the wild prairie into fine, fertile farms, dotted with splendid homes, where peace loving people lived. From the first she also took an active interest in the church and its work--an interest that never lagged the seventy-three years she lived in the community. Reared in a Christian home back in her native land, Norway, the inspiration thus received remained with her throughout her long life and she was an ardent church worker till her very last.
Not blessed with children of her own, she adopted into the home and reared two. They are Mrs. Olava Reinertson, now of Orlando, Florida, and Anton Porter, who has been staying with her for many years, caring for her till death claimed her. Besides these she is mourned by a brother, Lars Wing, her nearest neighbor. She is also mourned by a step sister, Mrs. Sarah Hendrickson of Ames, and a step-brother, Severt Houge, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
