DEATH REMOVES PIONEER WOMAN

Mrs. Severt Helland, wife of Pioneer Settler, Goes to her Reward. Many attend Funeral.

The death of Mrs. Ingeborg Helland occurred at the Lew Berhow home northeast of Huxley last Friday night after a brief illness. She had been making her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Henry Fatland and wife, near Slater. Expressing a desire to see her aged companion who was cared for at the Bernow home, her wish was granted.

Once there she seem imbued with new life and vigor and begged for an indefinite stay. While thus enjoying herself with her lifelong companion she became sick. She failed rapidly and on Friday night passed peacefully away by the side being the one who for fifty-six years had shared with her the joys and sorrows of long married life.

Funeral took place from the home and Fieldberg church at Huxley on Sunday, burial being made in the Fieldberg cemetery. The services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. Guttebo, who spoke touchingly of the beautiful life that had ended in the death of Mrs. Helland. The obsequies were attended by a large audience of near relatives and friends.

Deceased was born in Norway, May 3, 1825 and was one of seven sisters. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth and at the age of twenty-eight was married to Severt Helland. The following summer they left for America to make this country their home and settled in Kendall county, Ill. After a year's residence they moved to Crawford county, Wis. where they lived two years when they moved to Iowa, taking up their residence on what is now the old Helland homestead south of Huxley. There they lived till the year 1902 when they took up their residence near Slater. Of late she as well as her husband has been cared for at the home of their children.

Mrs. Helland was the mother of eight children. Of these, three are dead and five with a faithful husband survive her. They are sons Mike, Nels and Martin and daughters Mrs. Henry Fatland and Mrs. Lew Berhow, all of whom were present at the last sad rites.

Five years ago last September she and her husband celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage and were guests of honor at an elaborate reception given them.
