K. Patricia Rogerson, 80, of Toledo, Ohio, died Monday, Aug. 29. After a six-month battle with brain cancer, the Lord called Pat home. The funeral will begin in the mortuary at 9:30 a.m. Friday followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.

Pat was born March 17, 1925, in Keokuk to Leo and Helen (Sargent) Rogerson. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines in 1942 and attended Drake University. Through her working career, she was an executive secretary for Colonial Nursing Home, the Metroparks of Toledo, St. Ursula Academy and in the MCO Radiological Physics and Nuclear Engineering Department.

She was member of St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Catholic Church and also one of its charter families under Fr. James Brogan. She helped to form the first Altar and Rosary Society and was a former president and also served on the liturgy committee. She was a founder and coordinator of the physical fitness program at the school during President John F. Kennedy's era. She helped serve at the parish funeral lunches and helped occasionally in the church office by printing church bulletins. She did many years of civic, church and school volunteer work, including being a weekly reader on the Audio Network for The Sight Center of NW Ohio from 1994 until her illness.

She was a loyal volunteer with the blood drives for the Red Cross since the 1960s, including the drive at St. Pat's just this last January. She was active for 10 years in the Heatherdowns Park Civic organization. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Horseback riding, English style, was an enjoyable hobby at the Howard Stables for many years. With her husband, Glen, they enjoyed playing duplicate bridge with dear friends, playing tennis and square dancing with the Seaway Squares. She served as the secretary of the Ohio Parkinson's Foundation/NW Region Board of Directors for many years. An avid Toledo Mud Hens and Detroit Tigers fan, she never missed an opening since 1978 in Tiger Stadium until this year.

She was a loving grandmother and great grandmother who never missed an opportunity to be with the kids for birthdays, ballgames, tennis matches or any school play.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Glen O. Schmakel; three sons, Dr. Jeffrey (Kathy) Schmakel, James (Dr. Patricia) Schmakel and Dr. Lawrence (Terri) Schmakel; grandchildren Dawn (Andy) Woodman, Lisa (Rob) Fox, Michael Lukacs, Katrina (Chris) Poremsky, Heather Lukacs, Bryan (Becky) Schmakel, TJ, Kate Lukacs and Jay Schmakel; step-grandchildren Kelly Faltis, Alexa and Rachel Villegas; and great grandchildren Elijah, Gabrielle, AJ, Joey, Alexis, Brandon, Silas and Jonathon; two sisters, Helen Harris of Des Moines and Janice (John) Benes of Palm Harbor, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who love her dearly.
