John "Jack" Kenneth Hynd, 83, of Ames died Monday, Aug. 29, from complications during surgery. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Burial will be in Cambridge Cemetery.
Jack was born to Robert and Ruth (Swanson) Hynd on March 4, 1922, in Hiteman. He moved with his family to a farm southeast of Huxley where he attended schools and graduated in 1939. He was confirmed in the Palestine Lutheran Church. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944-46 during World War II. He continued his education at Iowa State University and graduated from Drake University with an accounting degree in 1948. He married Dorothy Leland Nov. 13, 1949, and to this union, two daughters were born, Paula and Beverly.
He worked for an implement business in Huxley and had a partnership in the Huxley Standard Station. Later, he joined his uncle in a farm real estate business in Des Moines. He retired in 1986 but continued to stay busy as he and Dorothy managed Pheasant Run Apartments in Ames for nine years. He was a longtime member of Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley; a 50-year member of the American Legion; a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the VFW Post 5459 in Huxley.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Paula (Dick) Belz and Beverly (Bill) Berg, all of Ames; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his step-mom, Pat.Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 tonight at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.
