Daughter of Another Pioneer Nevada Family Called By Death
Mrs. Edith Ferner-McCall, 69, widow of the late F. C. McCall, died at the home of her son Thomas Clifton McCall, Lincoln and Second street, early Sunday morning, a victim of hear complications from which he had been a sufferer for about 14 months.
Mrs. McCall, who since the beginning of her illness had made her home with her son and family, where she had been tenderly cared for, spent seven weeks at the Mayo hospitals at Rochester without benefit. While she had been confined to her room and part of the time to her bed, more recently her condition showed some improvement.
She was not so well on Saturday afternoon and physicians were called to her bedside for consultation. During the evening she visited with her son and family until after midnight. About 2 a. m. her physician was called to the home at her suggestion. At about 3 a. m. she passed peacefully away, surrounded by her son and her daughter-in-law and their family.
The death of Mrs. McCall marks the passing of the last of one of the pioneer families of Nevada--that of James D. and Virginia Ferner.
Born in Nevada, February 23, 1869, she had lived in Nevada all of her life. Graduating from the Nevada schools with the class of 1887, she taught school for a short time, and was later engaged in the mercantile business and on May 7, 1895 was united in marriage to Frederick C. McCall, son of another prominent pioneer family. Two children were born to Mr. and Mrs. McCall, they being Thomas Clifton McCall of Nevada and Mrs. Hazel McCall Mills of 6815 South Union street, Chicago.
Mr. McCall died very suddenly of a heart attack in September, 1923; the sister Miss Elva Ferner died three years ago in December and the mother Mrs. Virginia Ferner a year ago August 1.
Of her immediate family she leaves her son Thomas Clifton, wife and three sons and the daughter Hazel Mills, husband and two daughters. The grandsons are Thomas, James and Frederick, all of Nevada, while the granddaughters are Virginia and Barbara Mills, both students at Monticello seminary in Illinois.
Mrs. McCall had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and especially active in the Sunday school and other departments of the church. For many years she had been super intendent of the Primary department of the Sunday school. While she was a longtime member of Chapter AM, P.E.O. and always active in Women's club work and other groups working for the betterment of the religious, social and civic interests of the city, of more recent years she had been compelled because of her impaired health to give up such activities.
She will be most kindly remembered not only among the people of the city, but by a wide group of friends and acquaintances over the county, as a woman of the finest characteristics and of very superior talent.
Funeral rites will be held from the home Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 with Dr. C. D. Loose in charge. Burial will be in the family lot in the Nevada cemetery.
Other members of the N. H. S. class of 1887 of which Edith Ferner-McCall was a member, were Maude Ballou of Nevada, Effie Curtiss Campbell of Fort Worth, Texas, Charlotte Dale of Los Angeles, Bird Rufley-Dudley of Lake Worth, Florida, Sylvia Thompson-Klove of Los Angeles, Emily Kilburn-Howe of Long Beach, Calif., and Clarice McCarthy and Thomas Colson deceased.
She had been enjoying the presence in the city of Mrs. Grace Briggs of Los Angeles, California, who had been her friend since high school days and whom she expected to entertain at her son's home on Sunday.
