Zearing Woman Died as Result of Burns Saturday

Zearing, March 28--Mrs. Charles Barnard, jr., 18, farm wife and mother, died in hospital at Iowa Falls Saturday afternoon, from the effects of burns sustained earlier in the day, while kindling a fire with kerosene.The body was returned to the Brouhard Funeral home in Zearing, where it will be held until the funeral services Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 at the Evangelical church, with her pastor, Rev. Kernew in charge. Burial will be in the Zearing cemetery. There will be prayer service at the funeral home previous to the funeral.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rhodes of New Providence, parents of Mrs. Barnard, who had started on an overland trip to Missouri but a few hours before the fatal accident were intercepted near Des Moines and returned to Zearing Saturday afternoon.
Mrs. Barnard was starting a fire in the cookstove with kerosene when the flames burst out. Her clothing caught fire and she ran screaming into the yard.
Her father-in-law, Charles Barnard, extinguished the flames in her clothing and arranged to take her to the hospital.
The house was not damaged by the flames. Mrs. Barnard and her husband had just moved into a new house on the farm. Mr. Barnard's parents lived in another house nearby.
Mrs. Barnard is survived by her husband, a three-month old boy, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rhodes near New Providence, and a brother, Kenneth.

Funeral Rites Held for Mrs. Chas. Barnard Victim of Burns
Zearing, April 1--The Evangelical church was filled beyond seating capacity with sympathizing friends at the final funeral rites for Mrs. Charles Barnard, jr., held in Zearing Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock.
Rev. R. E. Kerney, pastor of the local church, was assisted in the services by Rev. L. D. Sours, pastor of the Church of Christ of Iowa Falls.
Mrs. Orpha Hankins, Mrs. Myrtle Martin, G. B. Womeldorff, Glen McBride, forming the mixed quartet, rendered the vocal selection, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Lyle Bailey. The flowers were in charge of Mrs. S. F. Chance, Mrs. Lowell Hoberland and Mrs. Chester Couser. Members of the junior class of Lincoln township high school attended the services in a group, she being member of that group before her marriage.
The pallbearers were Chester Couser, Lowell Hoberland, Louis Phillips, Ray Phillips, Arthur Turner and Irvin Thorson. Burial was in Zearing cemetery.
Relatives of the deceased were present from Missouri, Alden and other neighboring towns, also Mrs. J. R. Harrison of Marshalltown, Mrs. Carrie Anderson, Mrs. Wilbur Cole and Mrs. Addie Barton of Jefferson; Mr. and Mrs. Yates Allen, Mrs. Nora Johnson, Mrs. Ione Snider of Churdan; Mrs. Frank Andre, Mrs. Luella Board and Jack Morgan of Adaza; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Reischauer of Story City and Mr. and Mr. Ross King, Clifton King, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Yeager and children of Colo.
Mrs. Chas. Barnard, jr., was born Frances Rhoads on February 12, 1920, and passed away on March 26, 1938 at the age of 18 years, one month and 14 days. She was born at Green City, Mo., the second child of Charley E. and Verda Rhoads. Frances attended the Zearing school and completed two years of high school.
Since their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Barnard have been living 3 1/2 miles southeast of Zearing, where a cozy home had been built. Frances was appreciative of every kindness and consideration shown, and was much appreciated by all who knew her. One can hardly realize that she had been so quickly and tragically taken from us.
Mrs. Barnard is survived by her husband, Charles, jr., her son, Harold Dean, three and one half months of age, her parents and her brother, Kenneth.
