From Nevada Evening Journal February 3, 1938 (page 6)

Special to the Journal
Zearing, Feb. 3--Final rites for Joseph C. Allen, 76, longtime resident of this community who died at a Marshalltown hospital Saturday afternoon with his pastor Rev. Manning in charge. Burial was in the Zearing cemetery.

Relatives and friends had gathered here from various parts of the state, to join with local people in paying a final tribute of respect t this beloved citizen.

From Nevada came several of the county officers with whom he had been associated in former years.

Joseph Crispin Allen son of Joseph and Elizabeth Ingram Allen was born near Bladensburg, Iowa on August 17, 1862 and passed away on January 29, 1938 aged 75 years, 5 months and 12 days.

His boyhood days were spent in that vicinity until in 1887 when he came to Story county and located near Zearing.

On March 6, 1889 he was united in marriage to Anna M. Morgan of Colo, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: John W., Earl E. and Mary E. Lundy all of Zearing who with the wife and mother, five grandchildren and one great grandchild survive him. He also leaves to mourn his passing two brothers J. M. Allen of Rockyford, Alberta, Canada, C. W. Allen of Zearing and one sister Clara Wheaton of Sigourney, Iowa, also a large number of other relatives and friends.

He continued his residence on the home farm near Zearing until January, 1917, when the family moved to Zearing to the present home.

He held many positions of trust during his lifetime serving as township assessor for 10 years, later becoming county supervisor for six years and then became postmaster of Zearing from which position he retired in April 1935. He was also a longtime member of the I.O.O.F. having been a member of this organization for more than fifty years.

In the year 1895 he became a member of the Christian church and during the entire period thereafter was a staunch supporter of the church and its activities. He had held many positions of trust in the church and was elder and clerk at the time of his death.

Thus in a few words is epitomized the passing of a true Christian gentleman, one who was a true father to his family, a kindly neighbor and a real friend to all with whom he came in contact. His life was an inspiration, his memory a benediction.
