Lorada B. (Gardner) Custer, 83, of Jefferson, died Sunday at Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson. Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 25, at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson with burial in Jefferson Cemetery.
Lorada B. (Gardner) Custer was born Nov. 23, 1921, on a farm near Churdan to Albin B. "Pete" Gardner and Pearls E. (Andrew) Gardner. She married Jacob E. Custer May 5, 1943, in Omaha, Neb. She graduated from Paton High School in 1939. The couple farmed for many years on their Iowa Century Farm north of Jefferson. They were the parent of two sons, Roger and Thomas. She was a homemaker for the Deptartment of Human Services and Greene County Deptartment of Public Health; she retired in 1985, She returned to that position from 1990-92. She donated decades of service to the Greene County Medical Center as a hospice-respite volunteer and an auxiliary volunteer. She was a member of First United Methodist church in Jefferson.
She lived her life as a caretaker of her family, her friends and her flowers in her yard. She also enjoyed reading and making scrapbooks.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Roger and Carole Custer of Jefferson and Thomas and Laine Custer of Jefferson; three grandchildren, Whitney Custer of Jefferson, Leslie Custer of West Des Moines and Grant Custer of Jefferson; one sister, Zatha Blair of Jefferson; one brother, Larry Garner of Jefferson; one brother-in-law, Jody Custer of Jefferson; one sister-in-law, Mary Catherine (Custer) Dodson of Fort Worth, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob; one brother, Clyde Garner; two sisters, Zelpha Taylor and Marjorie Gardner; and her parents.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Aug 24, at Slininger-Rossow Funeral home in Jefferson with family present 7 to 9 p.m.
The family suggests memorials to Jefferson Public Library or Greene County Medical Center.
