Otis Bump Buries Friday With Military Honors

Otis A. Bump, 45, native son of Lincoln township, World War veteran and grandson of a Civil War veteran was buried in the Zearing cemetery Friday afternoon with military honors at the Zearing Episcopal church with Rev. R. - ----- ------- assisted by -- ------ of Van Horn.

Music was furnished by a mixed quartette consisting of Mrs. -erry Hankins, Mrs. Harry ------, Gilbert Womeldorf and Glen McBride with Mrs. Lyle Bo--- at the piano.

The pallbearers selected from Zearing Legion men were Guy ---tterback, Dr. L. P. Sterling, L. - Madison, Harry Britten, Hans ---- and George Hanson.

Otis Bump entered the service as a private leaving Nevada with the large contingent entraining here on the morning of July 25, 1912 for Camp Pike, Arkansas, -- training and there on August -- he was promoted to the rank of corporal. After the signing of the Armistice, he was transferred to Camp Dodge, De Moines, where he was discharged on January 10, 1919, from Casual Detachment No. 33, 163rd Depot Brigade.

Returning to his harm home near Zearing, he was active in the organization of the Zearing American Legion post, being one of the charter members and held a card of twenty years continuous membership in Zearing Post No. 116 American Legion, Department of Iowa.

Otis Albert Bump, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred M. Bump, was born on the family homestead three miles southwest of Zearing Feb. 10, 1893 and departed this life Wednesday morning, Oct. 5, 1938, at Ellsworth hospital, Iowa Falls at the age of 45 years, 7 months and 25 days.

Although a chronic sufferer for several months past he was always patient and uncomplaining and his illness was not known to be serious until the past week.

He has lived his entire life on the place where he was born with the exception of of one year spent in Minnesota and seven months training at Camp Pike, Arkansas, during the World war.

Otis was a man of unquestionable integrity and enjoyed a large acquaintance in the affairs of business in the surrounding towns and the local community. He loved his home and family and was ever ready to assist them in any way that would contribute to their welfare.

He was always interested in his neighbors and friends and rendered many kindly deeds in his quiet and unassuming manner.

His home, relatives and the entire community have suffered a deep loss by his passing.

His mother having preceded him in death August 20, 1928, the immediate family remaining are his father, Fred M. Bump of Dows, Iowa, his sister Mrs. Irene Upchurch of Colo, and brothers Thomas of Sumner, and Clarence and Ross of Zearing.

One nephew, Richard Bump, of Sumner, Ia., and four nieces, Shirley Ardith and Barbara Ann Upchurch of Colo and Patricia Bump of Zearing and a large number of other relatives.
