Funeral Services Held Monday For Mrs. Verne Smith

Roland, Jan. 30--Funeral services for the late Mrs. Verne Smith of Rockford, Ill., were held at a funeral home on Monday afternoon with Dr. O. Garfield Beckstrand, pastor of Trinity Lutheran church, in charge and burial was made at Rockford. Mrs. Smith passed away at the General hospital at Madison, Wis., at 3:15 a.m. Friday morning. She had been in poor health the past year and had undergone several major operations.

Mrs. Smith the former Mayme Howen, daughter of Odne Howen of this place was born Nov. 1, 1894. She grew to womanhood here and was married to Verne Smith of Waupun, Wis., June 20, 1917. The first years of their married life was spent at Waupun and they later moved to Rockford, Ill. She was preceded in death by her mother. She is survived by her husband, two sons, Wallace, a student at the University of Illinois, and Ronnie at home and by twin daughters, Shirley and Mrs. Charlotte Ingwalson, both of Rockford and by her father, Odne Howen and four sisters, Mrs. Orpha Larson of Roland, Mrs. Stella Frederickson of Ames, Mrs. Cleone Brown of Waupun, Wis., who had been with her constantly the past month and Mrs. Esther Lee of Rhodes and one brother Wilbur Howen of Jewell.

Among those who attended the funeral were Odne Howen and Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Larson of Roland, Wilbur Howen of Jewell, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle brown of Waupon, Wis., Mrs. Stella Frederickson, Mr. and Mrs. George Grinstead and Mrs. Samuelson of Amws, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Danielson of Ellsworth and Mrs. Mary Baehm of Sterling, Ill.
