Former Story County Woman Pneumonia Victim
Funeral services for Mrs. J. M. Bales, 81, for many years a resident of Story county north of McCallsburg, and well known to many people of the county, who died at the Deaconess hospital at Marshalltown Wednesday night from an attack of pneumonia, will be held at the Purcell Funeral home, Marshalltown, Saturday morning at 10:30, after which the body will be taken to the Albion cemetery for burial by the side of the husband, who died in California November 26, 1935.
Mrs. Bales, whose home has been in California, came back to Marshalltown some time ago for a surgical operation. From this she had recovered and had been staying at the home of her nephew, R. D. Vail in Marshalltown. She went to McCallsburg to attend the funeral of her former friend, the late N. H. Nelson, and in the trip contracted a cold, which developed into pneumonia. She was taken back to the hospital Saturday.
Mrs. Bales was born Charlotte Brown, the daughter of Nathan I. and Sophia Hart Brown Jan. 15, 1856 at Franklin Grove, Ill. In 1875 she moved with her parents to Colo where she lived until her marriage to Mrs. Bales Jan. 25, 1881. The couple lived on a farm near McCallsburg for 21 years and in 1903 moved to Albion where they lived until 1904 when they moved to Marshalltown, making their residence at 514 North Second street.
Mr. Bales died Nov. 26, 1935, at the home of their son, Frank in Ontario, Calif. Since his death, Mrs. Bales had made her home with her son in California and with her nephew, Ray D. Vail, in Marshalltown. Mr. and Mrs. Bales celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Jan. 26, 1931 at their home in Marshalltown. Both were members of the Presbyterian church in Marshalltown.
Surviving, besides the son who reached Marshallton at 1:23 a.m. Thursday, are a grandson, Bruce Bales, of Ontario; two sisters, Mrs. N. A. Vail of Marshalltown and Mrs. D. S. Collins of Albion, and two brothers, S. F. Brown of Council Bluffs and N. A. Brown of Kimball, Minn. Three sisters, Mrs. Melvina Warner, Mrs. W. H. Vail and Mrs. F. D. Dennis, and a brother, B. F. Brown, preceded her in death.
