Funeral Services Held at Huxley for Late Nels Dueland

Huxley, Oct 1--Funeral services for Nels Dueland were held at the Fjeldberg church at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, following a short prayer service at the home The services were in charge of his pastor, Dr. J. N. Anderson, assisted by Rev. P. Buland, who spoke in the Norwegian language.After scripture reading by the pastor, the audience sang a hymn "I Know of a Sleep in Jesus Name." Dr. Anderson then addressed the large audience and chose for his text Second Corinthians, 5th chapter, first verse.
He spoke of his intense love for the word of God, the long and active life of a strong man, for his family, church and community. He referred to the "earthly house of this tabernacle which were dissolved" and finally "the eternal house in the heavens."
The choir sang "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" after which Rev. Buland addressed the audience in the Norwegian language.
A Norwegian duet "Shalt We Meet Beyond the River" was sung by Sten Stenson and his daughter Mrs. William Hendrickson of Clarion. They also sang "In the Land Where We Never Grow Old" at the house. Mrs. Gilbert Dueland accompanied at the organ and both songs were requested by the family.
Dr. Anderson then spoke a few words of thanks on behalf of the family, to all those who assisted during Mr. Dueland's illness and helped in so many ways at the time of the funeral.
The floral offerings were beautiful and paid silent tribute to the departed friend. Gifts to the missions in his memory totaled $57.75 and came from relatives, friends and neighbors.
The pallbearers were Knut Stensland of Roland, Sam and Tom Stensland, Tollef, Chester and Gilbert Dueland. The remains were laid to rest in the Fjeldberg cemetery.
Nels Christopher Dueland, son of Christopher and Christina Dueland was born in Olen, Bergen Stife, Norway on Jan. 22, 1855. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He graduated from the military academy in Christiansen, Norway.
He came to America in 1883 and lived with his parents at Sheldahl, Ia., for several years, later moving to Nebraska, where he spent 18 years. The remainder of his life was spent in this community.
He was married to Anna Eide on May 29, 1889, at Slater, Ia. This union was blessed with five children, Tollef of Nevada, Gilbert of Jewell, Chester of Huxley, Mrs. Carrie Charleson of Randall and Mrs. Nellie Ogland of Eagle Grove.
He passed away at his home Sept. 26 after a brief illness from diabetes and other complications, having reached the age of 82 years, 8 months and 4 days.
Besides his wife, five children and 15 grandchildren, he is survived by five sisters, Mrs. Anna Coughlin of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Kate Nelson of Ft. Dodge, Mrs. Stena Johnson and Mrs. Susie Lane of Des Moines and Mrs. Bertha Fronsdahl of Slater. Three brother and three sisters have preceded him in death. All the children and his wife were with him a the time of his death. He joined the Fjeldberg congregation in 1902 and has been an active member since.
