J. H. Burroughs, Pioneer Nevada Merchant Dead

J. H. Burroughs, 86, pioneer Nevada business man, died at his home, 1016 Eighth street, Sunday morning, at 1:50 after a long illness.

Mr. Burroughs, whose eyesight ha failed him about three years ago, had been failing rapidly for the past six months and had been confined to his bed for the past three weeks.

During those weeks he had been tenderly cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Earl Brouhard, who lived in the home and every possible attention was given to make his last days comfortable.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at the Bishop Funeral home and the boy will be taken Wednesday to Tipton for burial, by the side of his wife who passed away here a number of years ago.

A niece, Mrs. John Cessford, and her husband have been expected here from Tipton but their homing has bee delayed by the blockaded condition of the highways.

Mr. Burroughs was born at Lake View, New Jersey, April 17, 1850, a son of George and Sarah Burroughs.

Mr. Burroughs came west with his people when a young man of 18 years and it was at Tipton that he was married in 1883 to Miss Mary Rider.

As a young man, he had worked on a farm, taught school, had served four years as deputy auditor of Cedar county and then engaged in the mercantile business.

Mr. Burroughs came to Nevada in 1892 and was for many years engaged in the mercantile trade, first in the grocery trade, then for a time in the furniture business and finally back in the grocery business. He conducted a successful store in the south room of the Masonic building for many years.

Mr. Burroughs was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges, a charter member and log active in the Twentieth Century club and with his wife, as long as their health permitted, was active in the affairs of the Methodist church.
